    Hi gang,

I just received this and found it most interesting, the International Coalition of Performing Arts Aerosol Study, Round 2.  (I'll be looking up Round 1 I guess)  Preliminary results of a study of aerosol generation from wind instruments and voice.  It also has some takeaways at the end.  I look forward to your comments.

This is perfect! This is exactly the type of study I was looking for. My other life is that of orchestra conductor ( 2 orchestras) and symphony musician ( clarinet).  We've had to put both orchestras on hold until enough information could spell out exactly what is going on. This study gives us much more clarity.

In the major orchestra that I perform in, the discussion has to build plexiglass partitions for each wind player covering left/right/ and front.  In fact, major orchestras are already using a clip on plexiglass shields for hearing protection for those sitting in front of loud brass and percussion sections.  The idea is to extend that downwards to the floor and about 1 foot above the tallest musician. Of course, the tone will be muffled so some type of over mics would be needed to compensate for the loss in volume.

This study demonstrates that might not be necessary and masking of instruments might ( just) be the trick.

Thanks for sharing this study Zeno!

    Tom,

For dealing with orchestra in particular, both the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics have been conducting (sorry ;-) research concerning the "blast patterns" of various wind-driven instruments.

So flute is the safest, oboe most deadly.  Seems like the exact opposite of reality. Hmmm.

    Thanks for sharing this, Zeno!
The NFHS Performing Arts Aerosol Study released a third round of data. A study abstract from Nov. 13, 2020 and full document can be viewed here.
