I am interested in a small survey of how your school's recital fee policy works or doesn't.

At the U of Oregon we have a regular recital fee which includes one piano with lid (it's important later), recording, use of the designated hall and ushers.

We have add ons to include live streaming, a second piano and lid removal and replacement.  Our prepared piano instrument is extra also.  There is no consideration for harpsichord and IMHO there should be.  Many have tried to go the a la carte route to eliminate the recording but school policy dictates that all degree performances shall be recorded.

As we are having a "policy summit" in June I am interested in what you all might have to offer here.  Right now we are struggling with one faculty member who considers the charge for the extra piano discriminatory since other musicians who are performing concerto work don't have to pay the extra fee.  They have already paid for the their accompanying piano.

We currently have over thirty events scheduled before the close of the school year and graduation.  The lid on/off has put quite the challenge into the mix along with the eight performance pianos that need to be maintained and in the right place at the right time.

Thanks for considering and I look forward to your responses.

    Hi Mike,

At CalArts, a piano specially serviced for recitals (or multiple pianos... up to six!) is included in the price of tuition. All school of music sponsored concerts (which is nearly all concerts) are recorded, webcast and archived online. The only additional charges would be for additional lighting and/or audio gear (extremely rare, as the usual equipment is fairly extensive), or special tunings. If someone wants a tuning system other than ET, I give them an estimate (for the time needed to realize their alternative tuning, and for the extra tunings required, both to get the piano(s) there and to bring them back to ET between at 440). The special tuning fees goes to the piano maintenance budget. The rates are wholesale, usually one-half to one-third of what I would charge to perform the same work privately. Of course, once I have worked out the tuning system requested on the designated piano, subsequent tunings can be done by assistants. I do the concert tuning tuning myself.

    Hope that helps,

    Alan

At UNM we have no such fees (there may be one for recording in some cases). I would note, though, that all music classes have a fee added on (I think it is currently $8 - 10 per credit hour) specifically for pianos, including their maintenance and replacement. Our students have paid for the pianos they use, and collectively pay for my time to maintain them. The faculty are freeloaders in this system :-)

The only time fees come into play is when something is clearly non-curricular, rentals and the like.

    Hi Mike,

We charge $100 for recitals; ½ for the hall and ½ for the recording and must be reserved the semester prior to the requested date. $150 extra if they want one of our staff accompanists, otherwise, they find their own. We just purchased 2 new D's for the hall, so if they plan on prepared piano stuffs, they have to arrange to bring a Baldwin SF from across from the hall at their expense. There is an additional fee if they cancel or want a recital in the current semester.

    It seems to work well.

    Best to you!

    Paul

Paul's mention of a cancellation fee reminds me that we do have a concert deposit of $100.00. If the concert is cancelled, or even if the piano use is cancelled, without notifying me in advance, the deposit goes to the piano maintenance budget.
