I had a request from one of our musicologists.  She is seeking a documentary on 19th century pianos.  Many of the videos and other sources out there are concerned with the whole of piano history but she is wishing to concentrate on the above subject.

    Any thoughts?

The American Musical Instrument Society (amis.org) might help; its members include many piano historians.

Maybe the musicologist should go visit the Frederick's collection and bring someone to videotape their visit. They will get an ocean of information (and have many piano to inspect and play), assuming the Frederick's aren't suffering from laryngitis on that day.

Bill Shull knows a lot about the transition period 1860ish -1880ish  and has been documenting many instruments from that period.

Actually, Mike Reiter HIMSELF knows a lot about 19th century pianos.  He's a great person for his present position at Eugene!   But his question is about a video presentation on the subject.

As far as resources to visit, Period Piano Collection (Period Piano Center) is expanding in square footage, and will soon be able to exhibit a greater assortment of 19th century pianos, from the early Beethoven Broadwood through to the later Schweighofer, Bosendorfer and Erard.  www.periodpiano.org

Mike's faculty member asks a great question.  Eva Badura-Skoda hosted video, The Pianoforte, Indiana University Press, which was  excellent for its, and a good part of it covers the 19th century piano.  It is very Viennese-piano centered.    And it's pretty dated now.

I'd love to be a part of such a production, and include pianists I've worked with in the past, such as David Kim, Stephen Lee, and Gwendolyn Mok.  \

For us techs, a good start is Malcolm Bilson's recent article in the Journal, which advocates for the diversity of period performance all the way through the 19th century,

    Mike-
"19th century pianos" is a rather big topic!
It might help if she could tell a little more about what she is looking for.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.  I have three pianos here to help her out in her quest a JB Streicher, and Erard and an 1840ish Broadwood.

Yes, certainly the topic is overly broad but so was the description of the request.

I loved the field trip idea above and would not mind doing that myself.  Perhaps after the Covid mess.

    Hi, Mike,

I remember going to a special piano-themed exhibit that happened when PTG had a convention in Washington several years ago. The link below takes you to their collection, but there may be video resources as well. When I was in NE, I bought a boxed set of slides with a book about historical pianos. They may have updated that.

    Here's the link:

    Mike,

Also, I've been to a couple of great museums dedicated to musical instruments of all kinds. They both have a significant variety of pianos.

I do not know if Wim Winters is a respected scholar or not but I enjoy his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/AuthenticSound/videos

It has a big variety of pre-industrial instruments played and recorded well.
