i'm looking for trainning/class

I have asked for information in this forum in the past and you were very polite to me. Again I come back here with a doubt. I am Brazilian and I live in Brazil, I am not a professional in the field of piano tuners, just a hobbyst, but I have a lot of desire to improve my knowledge, I bought some books as you indicated here before, these helped me a lot, expanding my knowledge on the subject. But I want more! I am thinking of attending a training in the USA, (preferably near to Los Angeles, because I  have a place to stay at there).  I am willing to invest some time and money to acquire more knowledge and techniques. Could you indicate me some options? Any idea how much I will spend for it? And how long does it take? Thank you very much!

You might consider going to the conference in Tuscon in July. Lots of classes, lots of people to talk to.  Kind of an immersion technique to get information.

Personally, I find the conference overwhelming, and I have been a member for 40 years. It's possible that in the LA area there is someone who teaches one-on-one, I think that would be ideal.

I live in Illinois, so appealing to our LA area members about that.

I would love to teach piano technology.  With 23 years of high school and college teaching experience I probably could do a decent job.  But, unfortunately  I couldn't do it for free.

    I don't think that person---from Brazil?---expects 'free'.

Try Piano Technician Academy online. (School has been going for 8 years and has multiple techs on the teaching end)

Try How To Tune Your Pianos by Mark Cerisano online. (Instruction has been going since 2005 and is taught by 1 man)

Try North Bennet Street School in Boston (Expensive yet highly regarded).

    Marcio,

Please contact me privately for information about
The North Texas School of Piano Technology.

You will need to commit to full time training for about
a year for section one. It is similar to North Bennett St.,
    but individual instead of classroom.

    Dave,

Is this a new school? Did you get it going? I didn't know North Texas had such a program. I'm glad to see it. We need more training opportunities, especially resident school training. It's been disappointing to see schools close over the years. I thought only North Bennett was left. I guess I'm out of touch. Retirement does that.

    Hi, Richard.

I founded the school three years ago, but have been
teaching privately for about 20. It is not affiliated with
UNT, but that is where I got my PT degree. I was the
last person to complete that program. And I am also
located in North Texas - Fort Worth area.
There is a listing on the PTG website under instruction.

    Three sections -

Section one if successfully completed, should get the
    student past the RPT exams.

Section two, advanced service, concert work, action
    restoration and restringing

    Section three rebuilding.

Each section is estimated to take about a year, but
depends on the aptitude of the student. Section
three may be longer according to how deep the
student wants to get, i.e. straight duplication of
existing components or design theory and modifications.

    Hello Marcio,

I missed this thread earlier, but better late than never!

Contact David Andersen and see if he's willing. He is the high-end technician in Los Angeles, and your best bet at high end training. Send me a private email and I'll give you his contact info.

I trained with David last year, and it not only greatly enhanced my skills, but also changed my outlook on life in general. In addition to being a true artisan, David's a great guy to be around. Definitely worth your time and money to invest in his training.

Also, Jim Busby wrote a series of ebooks (still writing them I think), that I've been very impressed with. Written descriptions of the subject, then videos to demonstrate. They are called Piano Technician Tutorials, and can be purchased rather inexpensively on Apple iBooks, or from www.pianotechniciantutorials.com.

    Hope this helps,

I think that Lincoln College from memory in the UK does a course for piano technicians and it might be worth considering -  https://www.lincolncollege.ac.uk/courses/ba-hons-musical-instrument-craft-piano-tuning-and-repair/

However I'm beginning to feel, having seen the results of the trade of many people working the craft from the point of view of a trained craftsman rather than a musician, that there is very special value in being a musician foremost and primarily before working in the making or servicing of instruments. The craft will tell you what but the musician in you will tell you why. In the business ultimately of making music I believe the latter is particularly important.

    Best wishes

    David P

Speaking as a trained piano technician who does not play much piano I support your opinion.  I would not consider training a piano technology student who does not play piano, at least at some rudimentary level.

    Mr. Diegoli-
Consider joining the CAUT (College and University Technicians) Community on my.ptg.
Volunteer your labor in return for learning opportunities.
I suggest this because universities often have a large inventory of pianos of all sorts, practice room through concert pianos, and almost always have a backlog of repairs and maintenance needs. Someone may need your services, and may have lots of pianos for you to work on.
It is fairly easy in our field to learn various ideas and believe we have mastered something. Real mastery comes from many encounters with the real objects, pianos in need of ordinary service. Extended hands-on work in the presence of an experienced technician will probably give you a base knowledge you can build on.
