Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations for a smaller and quieter vacuum cleaner. I want to be more discreet in my customers homes. I've added a picture of what I currently use.  It's quite loud and slightly bulky. Anything out there?

I use a Hoover Port-A-Power. It's fairly small and portable. I've found several in thrift stores for cheap, but they aren't expensive new. Not whisper quiet, but not overpowering like a shop vac. It has a cloth bag, but you can use paper ones if you like. The one I have is over 30 years old. If you really want quiet, my wife uses and Electolux Oxygen canister. That thing is so quiet almost can't hear it. There's more whooshing noise coming from the crevice tool than the canister itself. But, it's twice the size of the Hoover and twice as heavy, so I don't use it on pianos. Many techs use the Datamaster canister vac, but I don't know how loud they are.

In my opionion, our tools should be good for our use, no matter how loud or big they are, not how they effect your customers.

I just ask to use the client's vacuum. One less thing to cart around, and I've never had someone mind. Most actually seem impressed that I would take the time to clean out the piano (or maybe they're impressed that a guy actually knows how to operate one of those things).

Oh, but ever since COVID I've had to say "vacuum cleaner." If I just say vacuum they get a funny look on their face and say "sure, two doors down the hall." It turns out a face mask makes "vacuum" sound like "bathroom"!

A benefit to the Metro is the cloth bag. When the errant punching or screw gets whisked away, it is easily retrievable in the small compartment.

Whatever you get make sure you can put it on "blow".  It's very useful for getting dust out of the action and, if the space allows, for blowing dust out from the soundboard and under the plate.  I use a Fast VAC 500 https://images.app.goo.gl/5GbPTgeX2dYh4vis8.  Works fine, has a long cord that I find useful in many situations.  There are several decent vacuums in the portable category.

Mine is cumbersome to carry and handle around a piano and it's so loud I wear ear plugs.

The Data version only has .75 horsepower. The larger one has a longer hose and develops 4 hp power. Shop around for pricing. I have the large unit. Customers usually compliment on the vac's performance and low noise.

Daniel, it's not too bad as long as you don't let the filter bag get too full. It comes with paper filter that I reuse once or twice. I believe they do make a cloth filter for it which would be worthwhile. They also have a longer hose than the one it comes with, I don't have one but it would be helpful, the one provided is about 20-24". 
There are several versions of the vac n blow that Jon mentions, price goes up as does the power and a little bulkier, Jon says it is quiet so that's a plus and you get the cloth filter and longer hose and cord on the bigger models. I've never felt the data vac to be underpowered but may be louder because it's working harder.

I have used the larger metro-vac for years & love it. I recently bought the smaller data-vac thinking I could use it for lighter jobs and have my more powerful, slightly more bulky metro-vac for pianos full of animal by-products, etc. No, go. I would have returned it except my husband can use it so we're keeping it, but I find it not powerful enough for my needs. Just FYI. ;-)

Maggie writes of a "larger" metro-vac. I'm trying to figure out what models are the larger and smaller. I look at their website and there are about a dozen models ranging from 0.75 hp to 8 hp. Can anyone point out exactly which models they are using?  www.metrovac.com

Mine is cumbersome to carry and handle around a piano and it's so loud I wear ear plugs.

Hey, good idea John! Just make all those nasty spinets disappear! Perot's "giant sucking sound" comes to mind. That thing looks like what I need. It's portable, and has just enough power to do the job. And it has wheels too! It likely has extra long hoses to reach all the crooks and nannies. Good find.

I've avoided carrying things like battery operated vacuum cleaners or drills in my vehicle, for the simple reason that if one forgets to charge it at the right time, then at the wrong time, it will have a dead battery. Which, in the case of a vacuum cleaner, would not suck. And it's supposed to suck.

For me, the small inconvenience of having to find an outlet far outweighs the inconvenience of not having what I need when I need it. And maybe slightly better for the environment because we don't have to dispose of another battery.

I bought a battery powered vacuum for my wife. She uses it all the time. It's a Milwaukee, 12v battery. Almost all my powered hand tools are Milwaukee, so I had the battery system already. The vacuum, however, is milque-toast. Kinda noisy. No bag, but there's a filter to clean. Not a lot of power. It's just a glorified dust-buster. Not something I would use, or I would have stolen it from her already. I think my lungs could suck more that that thing. It sucks that it doesn't.

I got this computer keyboard vac strictly for the purpose of cleaning dust off of tuning pins. It recharges via usb and fits in the bag I carry for ETD, receipt book etc. separately from my tool bag. Probably about as strong as Paul's lungs but it's small, lightweight and doesn't leave that gritty taste in your mouth. It is strong enough to pick up the dust that lands on the tuning pins (causing rust) and dust behind the end blocks but that's about it. I use a brush in one hand and the vac in the other. Also okay for escain leavings. Good for quick cursory cleaning before servicing, not for serious cleaning jobs. Seems to hold a charge. $20 on Amazon.
The bigger hand-helds don't seem suitable for getting into tight places. This is something I don't have to go back to my car for.

     I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Festool CT SYS. I understand that this is not for everyone but I like it a lot more than I thought I would.  By itself it is small, light weight, and easy to carry around but has incredible power.  However, its salient feature is its ability to use with other Festool systainers. I have attached a few pics of how I use the vacuum and systainers in doing involved, in the home repairs where it is necessary to carry in a lot of tools.  It has enough power to use as a dust collector with power tools such as sanders, etc, or when shaping hammers, and can switch on and off with the tool. If you attach it to its dolly it will follow you around and while on the wheels I use it as a low bench to get my eyes down low for regulating. It has a blower port.  It comes with a HEPA filter which is important for jobs involving mouse droppings (hantavirus). I use a single systainer box that I carry by itself as my tuning kit (which is usually all I need) or I can stack it with the vacuum or other systainers on the hand truck.  The entire system is very efficient and gives a professional appearance.

Hi Glen,
I love my Festool CT dust extractor in my shop. But it’s far too big for me to carry in my car for in-home use. My other tools that work so well with it are not the typical tools that I find myself using for home service ( sanders, router, track saw, etc.). I do carry my Festool drill with me and a systainer for assorted other small tools.

Although on the expensive side, I highly recommend Festool for shop work, especially woodworking.

I'm not saying that I take sanders and tracksaws into customer's homes, only that the CT SYS has the power for those tools.  If you remove the "hose garage" and compare the actual vacuums then it's not that much bigger than some of the larger Metro Vacs. The size is 15 5/8" X 10 5/8" X 6 3/8"​.  It weighs about 15lbs  but hasn't been a problem since I carry it with the shoulder strap.  I forgot to mention that it's quiet enough to hold a conversation while standing next to it.   The last picture of my first post shows the vacuum next to a piano bench for frame of reference.   Like I said it's not for everyone, in fact it's for very few, but for me a tiny vacuum or "Harbor Freight" type  just doesn't cut it. If I didn't already own other Festool tools I wouldn't have bought it but I don't regret it - it's very nice.

I love my Festool CT dust extractor in my shop. But it's far too big for me to carry in my car for in-home use. My other tools that work so well with it are not the typical tools that I find myself using for home service ( sanders, router, track saw, etc.). I do carry my Festool drill with me and a systainer for assorted other small tools.

Although on the expensive side, I highly recommend Festool for shop work, especially woodworking.

     I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Festool CT SYS. I understand that this is not for everyone but I like it a lot more than I thought I would.  By itself it is small, light weight, and easy to carry around but has incredible power.  However, its salient feature is its ability to use with other Festool systainers. I have attached a few pics of how I use the vacuum and systainers in doing involved, in the home repairs where it is necessary to carry in a lot of tools.  It has enough power to use as a dust collector with power tools such as sanders, etc, or when shaping hammers, and can switch on and off with the tool. If you attach it to its dolly it will follow you around and while on the wheels I use it as a low bench to get my eyes down low for regulating. It has a blower port.  It comes with a HEPA filter which is important for jobs involving mouse droppings (hantavirus). I use a single systainer box that I carry by itself as my tuning kit (which is usually all I need) or I can stack it with the vacuum or other systainers on the hand truck.  The entire system is very efficient and gives a professional appearance.

I got this computer keyboard vac strictly for the purpose of cleaning dust off of tuning pins. It recharges via usb and fits in the bag I carry for ETD, receipt book etc. separately from my tool bag. Probably about as strong as Paul's lungs but it's small, lightweight and doesn't leave that gritty taste in your mouth. It is strong enough to pick up the dust that lands on the tuning pins (causing rust) and dust behind the end blocks but that's about it. I use a brush in one hand and the vac in the other. Also okay for escain leavings. Good for quick cursory cleaning before servicing, not for serious cleaning jobs. Seems to hold a charge. $20 on Amazon.
The bigger hand-helds don't seem suitable for getting into tight places. This is something I don't have to go back to my car for.

I bought a battery powered vacuum for my wife. She uses it all the time. It's a Milwaukee, 12v battery. Almost all my powered hand tools are Milwaukee, so I had the battery system already. The vacuum, however, is milque-toast. Kinda noisy. No bag, but there's a filter to clean. Not a lot of power. It's just a glorified dust-buster. Not something I would use, or I would have stolen it from her already. I think my lungs could suck more that that thing. It sucks that it doesn't.

I've avoided carrying things like battery operated vacuum cleaners or drills in my vehicle, for the simple reason that if one forgets to charge it at the right time, then at the wrong time, it will have a dead battery. Which, in the case of a vacuum cleaner, would not suck. And it's supposed to suck.

For me, the small inconvenience of having to find an outlet far outweighs the inconvenience of not having what I need when I need it. And maybe slightly better for the environment because we don't have to dispose of another battery.

Well, this is semi-annual click-bait, for sure - on a par with what's your favorite tuning hammer?  Okay, I'll bite, just this once.  If you are looking for quiet, I've never found a more powerful and more silent machine than the Euro-Pro series from Shark.  The last one I bought is all that is need for thorough piano cleaning, hepa filter included, bagless and super quiet.  You might want to consider gambling $35 on a refurbished unit:

Although I love the green Festool color, and the fact that it is 40% better than other brands for 3 times the dough,
I'm adding the old 80's version of the Eureka Mighty Mite to the list.
A $200. vacuum that is available in the free to $40. range on the used market.
I've used it for decades, it blows and sucks, I have 3 or 4 for backup and spares.
I bought a couple from clients.
