    Thursday August 6th

Before Equal Temperament Reigned - Jason Cassel, RPT

Have you ever wondered why anyone would request anything other than equal temperament? This class provides a survey of keyboard temperament history from the Middle Ages to today. Recordings will be played, including side-by-side comparisons of musical excerpts performed in equal temperament and historic tunings, as well as aural demonstrations of beating, the syntonic comma, wolf intervals, and examples of key coloration.

Jason Cassel currently serves as a Piano Technician for the Brigham Young University School of Music. He graduated with his MA in Piano Technology from Florida State University and earned his BM in Commercial Music from BYU. Jason has served as a Senior Piano Technician for the Aspen Music Festival, and received training at the Steinway & Sons Factory in New York, the Mason & Hamlin Factory in Boston, and from Yamaha Pianos in California.

Wednesday August 12th -  Fred Sturm, RPT

Key prep and preventive lubrication of a relatively new upright piano

The overall aim is to provide a solid foundation for later work, including better longevity for parts and regulation, and avoidance of the development of squeaks. These procedures can be used as part of dealer prep, or for a customer, as the preliminary of a larger job leading to regulation

Fred Sturm makes his home in Albuquerque, NM, where he has made most of his living in his "day job" of piano technician. He has taken care of the pianos at the University of New Mexico for over 30 years, and regularly writes articles for the Piano Technicians Journal and teaches classes at national and regional conventions of the Piano Technicians Guild. Recently he has been trying to bridge the gap between the two halves of his professional life, offering a class entitled "From the Point of View of the Pianist," where he tries to give his fellow piano technician a better understanding of the needs of the performing musician.

Monday August 24th - Blaine Hebert, RPT

    Corrosion control on piano strings

There are a great many treatments that can be and are used to clean and preserve piano strings, ranging from polishing with no preservatives to lacquers, oils and waxes.  The question is: Which of these are effective at preventing corrosion of piano strings under normal use and which are useless or harmful?

After initially conducting a controlled test of 11 different string treatments and since following up with two more tests, the author of a recent PTJ article on corrosion control will present his findings of  the best - and worst string corrosion treatments.

Blaine Hebert is a  3rd generation piano tuner & technician, Apprenticed in 1973 with a major piano & music house (Whittle Music Co., Dallas, TX), Yamaha Little Red Schoolhouse training, RPT since 2004
