What do you call yourself?

  • 1.  What do you call yourself?

So I'm prompted to ask this question  as a similar thread was started on the Acoustic Guitar Forum  (AGF) that I'm a member of , the post was  questioning the overuse of the term 'luthier' for anyone connected to guitar repair work , ooh and btw that thread  has had 3000 views and 100 replies.
Then I remembered in what now seems like another age  pre cell phones and email  that daily I would return multiple voicemail messages left on the landline , generally introducing myself as Martin Snow Piano technician  returning your call, these calls generally placed early evening were sometimes picked up by one of the kids in the home  and I'd hear them yell   ".....hey Mom it's the piano guy on the phone...."

The IRS designation is piano technician. Everything's a technician with them. So I guess officially I'm a piano technician.

I've heard the term piano tuner as the most common thing people call me. Also been called piano repair guy, piano tech guy, piano guy, piano artisan, piano dude, piano cleaner, and piano man. Those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head.

HA! Love it.  On my website I call myself a piano technician. I live in such a rural area, however, that my customers just call me "Maggie" & not much else. LOL!

On my billhead I've always been Registered Piano Technician or Registered Craftsman (age is showing)
Now that my sons are tuning with me and have been for about 7 years I use Piano Technician, as they have not gone through the examination process yet.
On the phone I introduce myself as Piano tuner.

As far as what I'm called - I shudder to think. Piano Lady, piano doctor, the tuner.

Several times I have told people that I'm a piano technician, and they have replied something like "Oh, so you repair them?  Do you tune them too?"  I always refer to myself in everyday communication as "piano tuner."  It's an old-fashioned title for an old-fashioned trade.  Just my preference.  Of course, this doesn't settle everything.  Occasionally people will ask "so do you also do repair work?"

I suppose my standard reply is, "I'm a piano technician. I tune and repair pianos."

If I am having a longer conversation, I will mention the Guild. "If you want to know more about anything, you need to hang out with people who know more than you do. If you don't hang out with people like that, you not only don't know things, you don't know what you don't know."

I have basically been dubbed "The Piano Doctor" partly due to the fact that the official business name is "The Piano Doctor", but also because I have always used a doctor's bag as my primary tool case (I have a thing for doctors bags), also since when I'm diagnosing a problem people often say I sound like their doctor, and I used to dress in a suit all the time but lately I have let that slide. I typically sign off posts as Peter Grey Piano Doctor. Seems to have stuck.

Years and years ago, I visited a grand three times to get on top of its problems. The third visit, my customer asked her three year old daughter, "Do you know who this is?" and she said, "She breaks the piano."
