1" Steinway key end felt

    Hi all-

I'm working on a Steinway M from 1935, which has 1" wide key end felt.  I'm not aware of any place we can get key end felt wider than 7/8".  Other action felt comes in red and 1" wide,  but that's not thick enough and not the same density.  I suppose I could simply glue 7/8 felt flush with the end and leave a small gap in the corner, but that isn't going to look right.  Does anyone have a better suggestion?

    thanks!

Jurgen sells appropriate felt in 4" or so wide strips, at various thicknesses (3, 4, 5, 6 mm or so), so you can match pretty much everything.

I'll add that Jurgen would probably be willing to strip the material to whatever width you like. I just bought the 4" strips and sliced it myself - that way I just have it one hand for whatever comes up.Works nicely for stringing purposes as well.

Thanks,  I'll put in an order right away and hope it can ship promptly.  Let's hope the factory parts department can open again soon also.

    best,

    Hi All,

Since we're talking about felt, etc., can anyone suggest a source for the green understring cloth/hitch pin punchings/string "braid" used in older Bechsteins? TIA! I've already checked Pianotek, and a few other sources.

I'd give Jurgen Goering a call or email. 1 (250) 754-2440 Orders: (888) 770-2440 or email info@pianofortesupply.com. If he doesn't have it, he may be able to find a source, as he has many European connections.

Who’s going to see a 1/8” gap at the end of the key? Function over form, I say, especially if time is of the essence. The contact point is pretty small with the underlever.

Glue felt onto sections of clamped-together keys, cut apart when the glue is set.

Jon, excellent method, that's exactly how we install key end felt on new keysets.  Much better job than cutting up ahead of time as it will match the key perfectly. We use a utility knife blade with no shoulder (lets you push all the way through the felt) and tap it through the felt with a small mallet. Makes a perfect job every time.

I like to come in from the end to have the keys index the blade. Then angle the blade for the top end to come in between the keys and slice downwards. You could remove the shoulder and slice in a forwards direction. I do this so rarely, I don't need a production method to reduce the time by a few minutes.

Photo of key end felt replacement.  Who knew those little clamps had some usefulness.  Also, I miss the old wooden Renner packing sticks (they now been replaced by some type of compressed cardboard).  When cutting apart you can use the backchecks to spread the keys just slightly to give a bit better access for the blade.  A slightly stiffer cutting blade is helpful to keep it from wandering.  Separating the keys into small groups allows you to keep things square and flush together.  I use liquid hide glue for gluing (thinking of the next guy).  To remove the old felt, saturate the felt with water with some wallpaper remover added.  Let it sit for an hour or two and the felt will lift off easily.  Let dry and then use a scraper to clean the surfaces before gluing.

When cutting the felt apart cut from this side toward the backchecks and you'll get better uniformity
