For years as Journal editor I have tried to ride peacefully over irreconcilable differences about the "right way" to tune a piano and how to teach tuning. In coaching I have had to face the fact that some people just couldn't hear what seemed self-evident to me, and that perhaps I can't hear what seems self-evident to others.
Here is the most direct explanation of the differences in peoples' hearing, and a physiological explanation.
If we want to understand how people hear piano sounds, this is certainly an area of research to pursue!

Really interesting stuff, thanks for sharing Ed!

Brings to mind a technical where we compared a piano tuned in equal temperament to one with well-temperament (darned if I remember which one).  Even among skilled aural tuners, including CTE's, there was a large difference in perception -- some found there to be a huge difference between the two, others said they sounded basically the same.  Perhaps this is related.
