The latest catalog show action brackets for YC and Weber grands . Has anyone used them and how did they fit as well as how much work did they require to replace the expanding/crumbling old brackets ?  I ordered 4 of the smaller size from Pal-Sound because that is all that was in stock. If I need larger sizes I may have to go with the ones Supply 88.  The piano is a PD-520 made by Young Chang for Piano Disc and is 200 miles away. I should have looked more closely when I had the action out however the end brackets where tightly expanded into the mortises. In addition many notes had  blocking hammers, the brackets where silver gray and the little bird told me you have a case of expanding brackets here son

    James,
Around 10 or 15 years ago, I changed the brackets in a Knabe branded Young Chang that was supplied by Piano Disc.
It's probably the same model as yours.
At that time I was able to get the brackets from Piano Disc, and they even compensated a pittance for the instalation.
I don't know the current situation, but it's worth giving them a try.

I have just ordered a set of the size that is not available from PAL sound. I guess I'll have the answer to your question shortly.

If I remember correctly, the larger brackets are in the center and the smaller ones are at the ends. Replace the ends first.

Floyd, did you buy action brackets from 88supply?  If so, how did they work out?  I'm considering buying replacement brackets for a Young Chang baby grand and I'm wondering if the ones from 88supply would do the job.  Thanks!

Hi James!  I saw this post and wondered if you ended up getting the brackets from Supply 88 and if so how they worked out. Thanks for any input you have!

I am planning on ordering a set over the weekend. It is important that you measure the existing brackets since they have 3 different sets. Vincent did not have them in the sizes I need.

The Supply 88 brackets arrived and I am impressed with their appearance and quality. I will be installing them this month. i am taking them to a PTG Chapter meeting to be part of a show and tell on action brackets. I have samples of some of the brackets I have removed ranging from visible cracks, broken off pieces and some that look good at first glance. However examination in good light and some magnification shows paint blisters. The last set I did was on a Piano Disc piano made by YC. The brackets had expanded so much on the frame I had to pry the top stack off

The customer that needed the action brackets backed out of the job accusing me of extremely overcharging him, that I had charged others less for the same job yada yada yada. None of his allegations are true. I responded to his message that I am a member of the Piano Technicians Guild and follow a Code of Ethics, that he pays the same as any other and I do not have a sliding fee schedule . Further I follow the guidelines issued by Young Chang when this was a warranty claim and from my experiences replacing brackets and doing action regulation. It is not worth dealing with someone who is a price shopper. I am sure I will run across another piano in need of brackets and I will have them on hand.

Did you tell him how much it was going to cost when you told him what needed to be done?
Maybe he changed his mind because he found someone to do it cheaper. As they say, you get what you pay for.
Yes, just hold on to the brackets. Fortunately, they are good on all YC grands.

I gave him a written proposal that was clear about the work and price. I ordered the brackets and notified him when they arrived. I did not get a deposit but he agreed but said he had to wait until after the New Year. I have the feeling he would be the type of customer who would never be satisfied claiming the piano was better before I worked on it. I had a customer with a Steinway that needed two pitch raises and a fine tuning. After I did the work he said I had ruined the piano- it didnt sound the same....

Early in my career, I did a at least a 100 cent pitch raise on a Yamaha Grand that was also way out of tune unison wise. Same thing happened, The client did not think I did a very good job as she was just so used to the piano the way it was. At lease a ruined piano was not claimed. You could always offer to detune it. Give the client a call and see if they still feel that way.

I remember hearing a story about a pitch raise from Tony Novinski (the late Ron Nossaman's father-in-law). He pitch-raised an old upright (at least, if not more than) 100¢. He returned for an arranged regular tuning, and the owner refused to pay him, saying it wasn't a real tuning because it didn't sound like a trombone.
