    How much did you quote him to remove the keytops, shave everything level, and reinstall the tops? And can this be done without removing the keys? Could save a little labor if you don't have to take them out and reinstall.

    By the way, are those wood shims underneath a couple? Could make a great Journal tip! (not the PTG Journal, but probably some journal somewhere...)

    Actually, if you look carefully, the bottom of the fallboard seems to be aligning with all the keys, which means the piano was designed this way. I wouldn't be surprised if the key unstop rail was designed to match the various key heights.

    Tell him they all do that.

    I took this picture some years ago, so my memory is a bit foggy. I think that I talked the church owners into disposing of the piano - it was old and worn out also. I seem to recall that the keys had gotten wet and swelled. The "shims" on the bottom of some of the keys are actually part of the original key - it split and is hanging down. Total mess.
