  • 1.  Non circular tuning pins on 1819 Broadwood

I'm in a degree of quandary about the appropriate conservation approach towards an 1819 Broadwood instrument

Ralitsa Penkova performs on the 1819 Broadwood at Hammerwood Park. This instrument was the same model as was sent to Beethoven. Formerly at the Colt Collection. This recording demonstrates the capabilities of the instrument and consideration is needed now to issues of stringing, and non-circular tuning pins which makes tuning stability tricky and damaging to the wrest plank.

I've successfully treated the pins with CA but as one turns them they tighten upwards, but easily slip back into the space the non-circular pins have left behind.

Were we to contemplate changing them might anyone have a source of historically appropriate oblong pins with properly circular shanks?

By the way, pianos of this period really need pure interval based unequal temperaments through which to build up their resonance and power. In the recording here, it's now tuned to Kellner.

    Best wishes

Try  https://www.vogel-scheer.de/en/info/ironmongery.html  for tuning pins.  You may need threaded pins.

Not threaded - this Fortepiano isn't young enough for that. Apart from which I make replacement threaded wrest pins for those 1875 +-  Broadwood grands which require replacements (rare)   Michael   UK
