  • 1.  Truck for a Yamaha U-1

I'm researching a piano truck for a U-1.  The piano is used for a weekly dance, and is only moved 10-12 ft each time its used. I was looking around on line, and in addition to the twin jansen upright dollies, I saw one that is set up specifically for a bunch of yamaha uprights. I didint see the manufacturer, but it was on the pricier end of things.  Any experience on which truck keeps the piano steady so it doesn't wiggle around and bug the pianist while playing?

Actually looking at that specific U-1 truck, I think it is just a spinet/console truck with a U-1 specific spike to go in the caster holes. Actually looks a bit wimpy.

I've installed a few upright dollies. I have always used the ones that Pianotek sells. They have a small wheeled unit and a larger wheel dolly. I tell the customer that the smaller one works fine if you don't have bumps to traverse and the bigger wheels if you do. My experience is that some pianos will wiggle/teeter a bit on the dollies - how much wiggle/teeter seems to depend on how the piano case is designed.

One very good (IMHO) solution I came up with for the wiggle/teeter thing is to custom modify a couple caster cups for the front wheels. Photo attached. Works like a charm. 'Course, you have to place them under the wheels each time the piano is moved. If the piano folks have two people available it's very easy for really anyone to do - just have one person sit on the bench and lift under the keyed with their knees and the other put the caster cups on place. Even someone intimidated at the thought of lifting a piano can do it that way.

I thought the leg dollies work great for short moves on a stage. And are economically priced.
