Does anyone know how to get their hands on some authentic Bosie plate bronze paint to touch up a nasty ding (slip of the hammer during stringing) on the plate? Factory cannot ship it, Yamaha only has MSDS, maker only speaks German...I don't know where to turn. Open to suggestions too.

Maybe contact Jurgen (formerly Forte Supply).  He may have some contacts in Germany (and maybe translate).  Or Ruth Zeiner of Allied Products.  She's always helpful for doing touchup.

Made a blend of powders to match as best you can. Mix into shellac.

    Jon,

Yes, doubtlessly what I will end up having to do. Evidently there is much copper color in it so a blend of largely copper and a bit of gold, then tweaked as I build it up. The real thing is simply unavailable on this side of the pond.

    Hi, Peter,

If memory serves, some years ago, Richard Davenport came up with a
formula that was a virtually invisible colour and texture match to the
    original finish.

Perhaps Alan Eder may know more about it.

    Kind regards.

Richard is retired and pretty much unavailable. Alan would probably be the better person to ask. He is close with Richard and probably knows the secret too. He can be reached through the CalArts School of Music in Valencia, CA.

My friendly local automotive paint dealer has a gizmo to analyze the paint on an object and come up with a mixing formula. He lends it to me and I put it on what I want to sample and press the button.

It works to at least get closely into the zone. From there, we might have to tweak a little bit but that has worked for me when matching colors. Never actually did it on a Bøsie.

That would work if you are spraying lacquer and have the pigments. For matching plate color I've blended various shades of gold with aniline dye (wood stain) to mix into shellac. If you need to darken the color a bit, spray over with amber-tone shellac.

Sherwin Williams likewise has a means to do that, however they need at least a quarter size piece to successfully scan and I only have small fragments left over from the impact.

    Geoff,

You are correct that Richard is retired, but where did you get the idea that he is unavailable? He has been coming out to CalArts once a week for years now, I have regularly been consulting with him about piano issues, and he will be leading the technical portion of our Los Angeles chapter's meeting a week from tomorrow. (With the assistance of myself and Robert Cope, our topic will be, "What Are You Afraid Of?")

    Horace,

    Long time!
After reading your post, I spoke with Richard Davenport about the concoction you mentioned. He does not recall what was in it. I will reach out to the party that has taken possession of Richard's tools and supplies, in case there is a container marked "Ersatz Bosendorfer plate powder" (or the like).

    Peter,

In the meantime,  Richard suggests contacting Ferdinand Brau at Bosendorfer. (He was at the Anaheim convention, taught some classes --excellent English-- and is the designer of the new 280 VC concert grand we heard in performance.) You can tell Ferdinand, "Richard sent me!"

    Best,

    Alan

    Alan,

Yes, I've actually been communicating regularly with Ferdinand on various issues of this instrument.  On the plate bronze unfortunately he said they cannot ship it due to its being classified as hazmat. He suggested Yamaha but all I could get from them was an MSDS that shows the manufacturer. Contacted them but it appears they don't speak or write English (or they were simply ignoring me).

    Oh well...

    Peter,

Sorry to hear that, but do not give up hope (at least, not just yet!)

If I can get my hands on some of Richard's magic potion, I will send you what you need. (Ironic, isn't it, that Richard came up with this concoction decades ago due to a stringing error that I made!)

    Best,

    Alan

    Peter,

Have you looked into the local beauty supply shop? They might have a lacquer based nail polish that might fill the bill? It might just work in a pinch, and it seems you’re in that boat currently.

Thx for the tip. I think that's going to be the ticket. My daughter found a color in the Ulta nail color myriad that looks like a near perfect match.
