I'm sure many people have their own version of this but here's my newest.  With this one the small lead is the handle and allows you to insert it easily from the proximal side of the wippen.  The screw is adjustable up and down (of course).  The screw is threaded into a let-off button.  Once inserted to the desired position you can index with a pencil around the front of the popsicle stick on the key so you can find easily reestablish your position once the stack is removed.  Since I frequently move capstans (and always turn slanted capstans to 90 degrees), I wanted a boat that was easier to handle and index.  (of course I sealed the small key lead with lacquer).  We have to safeguard ourselves from unwanted toxins--too late...

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand what this tool is supposed to do?  What does the screw on the let off button do?

The tool is for determining a new capstan position and the screw is to adjust the blow distance.

I am afraid of Lead poisoning, so i'm going to use lead as a handle, then protect myself with a lacquer coating.

Why not just use a wood dowel for a handle?

No reason, it's what was around that was the right size.  You can use what you want.

That's exactly how I designed my capstan locator tool.  Quick and easy to find the right capstan position.

Wouldn't it be more fun and entertaining to use a……
    Rocker capstan boat?
