🛠️ How the Schimmel Fallboard Attachment Works
"If you are trying to remove or repair the fallboard, technicians generally follow these structural steps:
Remove the Cheek Blocks: The wooden blocks on either side of the keyboard must be unscrewed from underneath the keybed and pulled straight up.
Locate the Hidden Brackets: Once the blocks are out, you will expose the metal brackets and slow-close dampers attached to the inner rim.
Lift at the Right Angle: Schimmel fallboards typically require you to pivot the lid to a specific angle (usually around 45 to 60 degrees) to line up the internal pins with the bracket slots before it can be lifted cleanly out. Avoid forcing it, as this can bend or strip the internal hydraulic dampening gear."
The above is from a Google/AI search. If I am correct (?), there is a piston mounted on the inner rim that provides the slow close damping. Baldwin grands also had this same mechanism. You can see part of the piston in the latest photo under the bottom edge of the fallboard. You can't lift the fallboard straight up to get it off, the fallboard has to be tilted outward, and the screw must be removed. Also, when you want to reinstall the fallboard, the slots in the fallboard brackets have to be at that same angle, and the attachment to the piston has to be angled to match, though it tends to move from that precise location. Hard to describe, but if you look carefully at it , you'll understand what I'm talking about.
So, my advice is to remove the screw completely, as well as any screw on the other side. then angle the fallboard outward at 45 deg angle and pull it up and out.
I hope this helps.
