Hi, Parker,
Both of Knabe and Chickering were basically done as independent entities well before WWI, M&H since 1929.
Highly recommended reading would include:
The Piano in America:1890 to 1940; Roell, Craig, UNC Press, 1991
And
Men, Women, & Pianos; Loesser, Arthur, Simon & Schuster, 1954
Both are readily available, with Loesser's being available from archive org
While Roell"s work is limited in range, he covers what went on during that 50-year period very well.
What's missing would be works of similar competency that cover the periods of roughly 1860 to 1890; and from 1940 to the present.
Kind regards.
Horace

Too bad Knabe and Chickering are no longer around. Hope M & H hangs in there.

Required reading:
The Steinway Saga: An American Dynasty; Fostle, D.W., New York, Scribner, 1994
While Fostle chases down a few questionable rabbit holes, this is still (generally) the most objective examination of a complicated situation.
Kind regards.
