I have a chance to get a 1920 Baldwin grand, 6'2". It would not cost me anything and I would move it myself. Is this a high quality piano worth restoring. I don't have much experience or knowledge about older Baldwin grands.

    Thanks!

It would be a Model L, which is 6’4”. It will be worth restoring, and it will sound great. But you will be lucky get $20K for it. In other words, just barely breaking even. But it’s worth the experience of doing the work.

Baldwin knew their stuff. Would end up being a good one probably. But, I agree that "making money" on it is unlikely.

    Hi, Peter,

Definitely agreed that Baldwin knew their stuff.

I’ve got a 1926 D coming on after the first of the year. While it’s no longer going to drive as large a venue as once it did, it can still sound great where it is. It should be good fun to work on.

    Kind regards.

Early versions were "C" with some other letter variations due to cabinet differences.   Yes, they won't bring money but they're great rebuildable pianos, same level as Mason etc.

We have four in our store right now - people aren't breaking down the doors for Baldwins but these are truly fine instruments.

Last night, I did a remote video tour of the piano with the owner. The soundboard is filled with crack repairs and definitely needs to be refinished.Otherwise, the piano looks OK. I've decided to pass on the piano and not get it. If the soundboard was OK, I would probably have gotten it, but for me it is not worth doing all the work to put a new soundboard in.
Thanks for your help with this. I'll keep a future eye out for this model.
