  • 1.  "Life expectancy of springs"

Just wondering what the "life expectancy" of the jack/spiral springs, damper springs and hammerbutt springs in an upright piano is/should be? Should one replace these every 10, 20, 30 years?
    Thanks

Jack springs probably should be replaced every 20-30 years. (Of course, they will wear out faster if the centers are too tight.) These are the most critical for fast operation.

Hammer return springs when they start to break, or can no longer be strengthened.

Damper return springs when they break<caret></caret>.

A lot depends on your climate. In very humid climate, springs will rust and break. Not in dry climates.
It also depends on the quality of the springs. I've tuned many 100 - 125 year old pianos with springs that are still working the way they should.
