Well Dawson String Covers  appear now to be the only listing in the Journal and they  have taken over Edwards  Covers but their prices start at $420!  I'd make your own , maybe I should encourage my favorite piano cover company covers by Alicia   to start making string covers ,it's family business Alicia her husband and son Jesse   In NJ used to make all the covers  for Apsco, I've used them for years  great covers  and excellent pricing.

Dawson cover prices you quoted are retail. Yea don't have to charge that much. You also have to consider the Dawson covers are !00% wool. Do you know the content of the other company? 100% wool is much more expensive.

Dawson covers are the best made and best quality string covers 100% wool with stitched  edges.  I have sold many and they are well worth the cost and look great. They have patterns for just about any piano. Not on;y do they collect dust and dirt but they absorb water like a sponge. Dawson can send you samples of the cloth and stitching as well asa nice flyer to give customers

I thought Dawson was too expensive and did the research, bought a nice, heavy weight 100% wool cloth. A friend did the sewing, I made the pattern. It came out really nice and it cost about as much as buying it from Dawson. You get what you pay for and next time they get my business. So don’t think it’s cheaper doing it yourself. The only cool thing about doing it myself, was the variety of color choices from the wool company. Also, due to the standard bolt dimensions, my cover had a seam in it. Not a problem, but it would have been nice to have one piece of wool.

I have a customer who made a simple string cover using inexpensive fleece material, I'm pretty sure it's polyester. I don't notice any obvious problems or difference from other pianos except the soundboard stays pretty clean. Does anyone know why using fleece is a bad idea? Thanks.

The fleece cover is fine for dirt, etc., but doesn't hold water. If it's
damp under the cover, it will hold it there and rust the strings.?? I've
seen some here in San Diego that had that happen. The wool content
should be at least 50%, in my opinion.?? I used to include that
Music-sorb in pouches under the cover where it was very near the ocean.??
It's a lot more expensive now, but it does work.?? If you had Music Sorb
under there, you could get away with synthetic material.?? Or maybe a
    damppchaser.

While felt, polyester pr fabric may all look good and collect dust they will not have the moisture absorption that 100% wool offers. The woolen string cover does a tremendous job of collecting dirt, dust, debris but is also a moisture absorber. This is especially important in areas such as the south where relative humidity can get extremely high or above the "safety zone" causing string rust and other issues. A customers Kawai grand was saved when a second floor whirlpool tub drain leaked on the piano below. The Dawson cover absorbed all the water with none of it getting on the strings, plate, block, hammers or soundboard.
If your ac goes down here in the summer for more than a few days, moisture can really damage a pianos strings . I had a customer who made a string cover out of fabric however the moisture got into the action and most of the piano hammers came unglued on the underside due to glue failure .

Dampp-chasers are a good idea under the piano to help with moisture deflection and wood stabilization. They are not recommended for install across the strings although I have seen and removed such rogue installs.

    Thanks James and Paul,

The point regarding moisture absorption or lack thereof is certainly an important detail of which to be aware and I'll relay that info to the customer. However, here in the Chicago area, even though we do get high summer humidity, most all of my customers keep the indoor humidity under control with AC. I'll suggest that my customer removes the string cover if the AC or power goes out in the summer.

I recommended that the customer contact Dawson directly because they can select the color of the fabric and the color and pattern of the sewn edging. I do not need or want to be involved beyond that.

Dawson will not deal directly with a customer.???? They only work with
technicians because they offer a discount to the trade.?? I already
tried.?? They can offer the different thread colors and patterns and
cover colors online, but the order has to come from one of us.

    didn't put them there.?? I can't reply via my.PTG because it doesn't
work.?? I just hit reply Group from my browser, and that's what comes out.

    Hi Paul,

    Your 4th post doesn't have a problem.

Did you create posts 9, 13 and 14 somewhere else, and paste them in here?

    Paul.

    Hi Paul:

I have just replied by using my Thunderbird browser.?? That's what I have
been doing every time, and the question marks started appearing.?? Before
the "upgrade" recently from Higher Logic (or whatever we're using), I
could log into My.PTG and reply from there.?? Now I can't seem to log in,
so I just hit "Reply Group", as I'm doing now.

This is the address that appears in my To box when I click on Reply Group:

    PTG_pianotech_5de70a5b-20f5-4451-860d-707a33f45a6b@ConnectedCommunity.org

I don't know if it's my Thunderbird browser that's doing it.?? I suppose
I could try using Gmail directly in their web app. and see what happens.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Paul:
Now I"m using the Web app for Gmail.  I noticed my last reply to your post also has question marks.  So here's my reply without Thunderbird...

Also, here's the message I get when I click on "Re: String Cover":

    "We're sorry.

We are unable to process your request at this time.

    Please try again later."

I used to be able to log in and it would work.  Now it doesn't, and hasn't since we upgraded the system.  Just FYI.

Let's see what happens, if we get more question marks..

    Paul

Looks like Thunderbird is doing something to create the ??'s.  None when I use the Gmail web app.  Weird.
