Would going from .276 to .281 be too tight? I doubt it. You could ream the hole to .276 if needed.
Mic the set and place the thinner ones in the high treble and the thicker ones in the bass. If they are 2 ⅜" in length,
I'd replace the single string pins with 2 ½".
The wire is thicker and to maintain the coil height above the surface, there would be less pin in the hole. Those pins usually get loose first.
