    Greetings,

1917 Steinway model A grand piano. The repetitions (AKA wippens) have assist springs on their flanges (see attached image).

If someone retrofitted them, they did a factory-quality install, yet did so on reps that are old enough to not have regulating screws in the jacks. (We are planning on replacement with WNG parts, withOUT assist springs.)

I have never seen assist springs on Steinway repetitions as original configuration. Has anyone else?

    Thanks,

    Alan

Steinway Hamburg used support springs with the hook on top around those years.

When I rebuilt my dad's 1895 Hamburg Steinway A, it had reps with springs. I didn't change them out at the time, but about 10 years later, when my niece took possession of the piano, and I had difficulties regulating the action, I decided to replace them with modern Steinway wips, which worked great.

    Thanks Wim, that's interesting.

Just out of curiosity, how did the wippin assist springs on that piano create regulation issues?

The wippens were over a hundred years old. The springs were worn out, and the jacks didn't have a regulating button on them. They were just tired.

    Wim,

Did you need to add much lead to the keys to counterbalance the weight of the action parts, in the absence of the wippen assist springs?

No. I didn’t. But I had already decreased the weight of the shanks to compensate.

Wippen support springs supporting just the weight of the wippen/repetition/balancier typically do the work of reducing touch weight by 9g-10g.  That's equivelant to one typical  large key weight of 13.5g at a .7 key radius point.

I tuned a Hamburg O with those springs just today. It was # 226000. (off the top of my head around 1925 or so)
It played pretty nicely but I am not the world's best judge of that.
