    Greetings,

1917 Steinway model A grand piano. The repetitions (AKA wippens) have assist springs on their flanges (see attached image).

If someone retrofitted them, they did a factory-quality install, yet did so on reps that are old enough to not have regulating screws in the jacks. (We are planning on replacement with WNG parts, withOUT assist springs.)

I have never seen assist springs on Steinway repetitions as original configuration. Has anyone else?

    Thanks,

    Alan

I have seen them at least once, on a Hamburg made O.  Can't recall the year, but I know it was not a new piano when the family that owned it fled Germany ahead of WW2.  The piano turned up after the war, and the family took it to S America where they had settled, and eventually brought it to the US.

Alan: you might want to check with David Stanwood. I think he got the idea for adding wippen springs from a Hamburg Steinway
