Best Let-Off rack

  • 1.  Best Let-Off rack

I think this question was asked in the early 2000's about the best let-off rack.  I used to have a wooden one made of maple, but it got lost somewhere in the last 20 years and I have looked everywhere online to find one.. to no avail.  Is it just best to get a Jara's 4n1?   Is it possible to make a simple rack?

It is worth contacting Schaff and seeing if they can supply their item 999, which is what you are describing.  It's not in the online ordering system, but that is not necessarily a sure indication that they cannot supply one.  And yes, it is indeed possible to make a simple rack.

Don't overlook the taut-line tool from Pianotek Supply.  It is a very useful and inexpensive tool, easily used in the field, for setting let-off and drop.

Thank you Floyd.  I just reached out to Schaff.  Hopefully they have something.  I will also check out Pianotek

In addition to the Jaras let off rail (sold by Schaff), which I have, several friends of mine use the WNG set up. It's more expensive but may be better, depending on what you plan to use it for.

Edit: Apologies, I meant the Grandworks system by Chris Brown. I’m not aware of WNG selling an action regulation station, just their really cool tools.

Thanks Benjamin.  I had looked at the one produced by Chris Brown.  It is very impressive.  I will probably purchase the Jaras. I want to kick myself for losing the maple wood let=off rack!

Consider the let off rack promoted by La Roy Edwards in this YouTube video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EYb904oDpk

I find this quite useful and accurate and I regularly use it to fine-regulate actions in homes and stores.

LaRoy Edwards' jig is simply the grand action version of using a vertical hammer rail to set LO. The only draw back with his, which you'll discover, is that its width is fixed, creating the situation of the guide LOs not being the section ends. But when you see how simple it is to make, you can make a collection of them to fit pianos other than Yamaha.

The Taut-Line is completely adjustable for action sections of different widths.

The only issue with the let-off jig is making it wide enough to accomodate the widest hammer section. Mine is 20" long with a 17" working section and I have yet to find a piano where it doesn't work.  There is no reason to have it short enough for any section; longer is better.  You only need to adjust it for each section you are working in.  You can work on a table, on an action cart like the La Roy cart or in your lap.

It isn't perfect, but it does work. I use it regularly.

    Hi, Blaine,

Sounds very much like the one I already have.

My goal is to have one in the shop; and one to carry.

I've not found any drawbacks to the design.

    Kind regards.

    Horrace (and anyone else);

I just made up a couple, one 20" and one 22", both have a wider base.  I should be able to get away with this post as I am not really trying to sell these, I would rather show my work so that y'all can copy it.  My latest version fixes a few minor problems (looser holes for the adjusting screws, washers with the wing nuts, wider base to avoid the hammer tails).  My $75 price tag was intended to frighten you into Home Depot for the parts, but I can make them for anyone who wants one.

If this gets deleted because of improper marketing advertising... well that's humanity for you...

I used to have a wooden one made of maple, but it got lost somewhere in the last 20 years and I have looked everywhere online to find one.. to no avail.?? Is it just best to get a Jara's 4n1??? ??Is it possible to make a simple rack?

Thanks for sharing that, Blaine. I've not seen that tool before. Is it essentially a repurposed Shank and Hammer Clamp, like Schaff's #890?

I learned a similar technique from the folks at the Renner Academy, using "the stick," which is essentially a long wooden rectangle with sandpaper glued on the bottom. The principal is the same but is more subject to moving around than the Edwards tool.

The "La Roy let off rack" (shouldn't there be a more accurate name?) works great, but has some minor issues:

I like to carefully regulate the two end hammers on each section to "get an average".

The #1 and #88 hammers need to be regulated separatly. I regulate the #2, #3, #86 & #87 as well as the two at each break.

Sometimes the hammer tails will drag on the tool and create issues.  There might be a better way to fix this, perhaps by using a wider (1") base piece.

If anyone knows of a procedure to regulate drop with this please let us know!

My offer to make these still stands ($75, plus shipping). About $20 from Home Depot.

Here's another version. The feet rest on Backcheck blocks, or whatever footing makes sense. For the Bass and Treble sections one foot is on the workbench, and the other on a Backcheck block. The threaded rods are long enough to accommodate any Action terrain. This is 18" long but you can make whatever length desired. I agree with Blaine, longer is better. It can extend into the neighboring sections without issue.

I doubt that this is a reporposed tool from another kit.  This is more likely a sophisticated version of the sand paper stick.
