Does anyone know the actual TPI of the old brass flange hamner rail screws? The whip rail is standard 8-32, but the hammer rail "appears" to me to be between 10-32 and 10-28. A standard 10-32 machine screw will thread in part way but stop prematurely (binding).

Visual TPI match ups don't look quite perfect, hence I'm asking if anyone KNOWS.

I do not know the answer but you may try the sizing gauges you can find at True Value hardware stores in the section that sells nuts and bolts. Some of the woodworking stores like Rockler and Woodcraft sell various gauges to measure nuts, bolts, screws. Are you referring to the hammer rail on a Chickering Grand that has brass hammer flanges ?

    Yes.

Those places only have standard threads and metric. I doubt this is a metric thread back then in Boston.

There are other types of threading standards but i dont know what they all are. Hence my hope that someone dar more knowledgeable on this might know.

    Hi, Peter,

There was a period of time during which Steinway used some 10/28
screws/nuts for some applications. Most of those supplies are
long-since sold out; and I'm not sure if a 10/28 machine screw is going
to be available without finding a fairly competent machinist.

That said, I'm with James in suggesting acquiring a thread gauge or two.
Depending on what you find at a Rockler or Woodcraft store, you might
also try checking out used Starrett tools on eBay.

I hope that this is of some help.

    Kind regards.

    Horace,

Yes...so I attempted to "figure" it out and it does in fact appear to be 10-28 (7 threads in 1/4" equals 28 tpi).  Probably available on the web somewhere.

I'm actually hoping to use an extant hammer rail yo make a nice let off rack (inspired by the thread on the same topic).

    Thanks!

    Hi, Peter,

If you find a source for even a tap and die for this thread, please send
along a link. I'll do the same.

While it's usually for older Chickerings (and the occasional S&S), I'm
finding myself running into these more often these days. Like myself,
    an antedeluvian design....

    Good luck; and good hunting!

    Kind regards.

Peter, years ago both Jude Reveley and Jim Iallegio replaced some of those old actions with WNG actions. They might have saved a few (or many?) screws that could help you out on your project. Charles Jackson may also be a resource.

    Pat,

Yes, I'm sure Jim has a truckload of Chickering stuff. Screws I have. I was looking to get threaded rod and wanted to correctly determine the thread.
