I was reading an interesting article about pianos in India and the conditions there that are highly destructive- humidity, insects especially ants, lack of technicians etc.
The article had specific features a piano needed including cases without veneer, full iron frames, non felt dampers. One thing that stood out was the use of copper as a coating on plain wires, rustproofed springs, reenforced hammers and buttons with screws, mortised back posts. celloid keytops.

I am wondering if copper coated wire has ever been used here on domestic pianos. I am also wondering if Chickering & Sons did anything to prepare their pianos for India since they did export pianos there when one of the Chickerings went there for health reasons and took some pianos to sell.

The only treated piano wire I know of in the US are the stainless wires and the gold coated wires by Shomacker

I once worked on a Steinway vertical that had copper clad tuning pins and the butt and catcher leathers were stitched into the wood at the corners.

At least into the 1980s Mapes could furnish what they called 5% copper wire for wrapping bass strings. It was iron plated with copper.
