In the comments, I learned the way it works is that the tool and the workpiece are slightly at an angle. As they spin, the edges of the tool eat away at the metal. I never took metal class in High School, so I know nothing of machining. I just found it fascinating to see how something spinning could create a hexagonal shape. Just by watching, it's not intuitive what is going on.

Subject: How Tuning Tip Hexagonal Sockets Are Made
Paul,
I believe our tuning tips are made by broaching, not machining, but I could be incorrect. Many years ago (45?) I witnessed the process at American Piano Supply Co. in Clifton, NJ.
The video you provided in fascinating. I still do not understand how the result was achieved!

I came across this Youtube video which shows how a machine makes a round hole into a hexagonal one just like in our tuning tips. I've never seen how they were made and wondered many times how it's done. So, I thought someone might be interested to see how these things are machined.

Read the comments also to learn more about how the machining process works.
