    Greetings,

Does anyone have experience using the new "Piano Guard Humidity Control System" being offered by the Professional Piano Technicians Network? It appears to do everything that the PLSS does with the added feature I have sought for years now: remote monitoring.

    Thanks,

    Alan

I've installed 2 piano guards. It works as good as a PLS but different.

A PLS is always on. So it heats or it humids even when the humidity is fine. This makes it a bit expensive because of the constant electricity it needs.

The Piano guard only begins to work when the humidity is under 45% or above 60%. In my country (the Netherlands) that means it is not doing anything for 50% of the time and only takes care of the extremes. It also has an App where you can monitor the Humidity. Small downside is that it takes a bit more time to install properly. There are 3 heaters and all the cables are pretty thick so it takes time to make it look clean.

So far the two grand pianos where I installed them improved tuning stability the same as a PLS normally does. For Grand pianos I will continue to use the Piano Guard in the future.

Coen, thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven't installed a PianoGuard myself, but I did attend a presentation from the developers. To me, maintaining stable humidity inside a piano isn't rocket science. The whole setup with multiple sensors and rather thick data cables feels somewhat excessive to me - although, to be fair, the developers did mention they're working on reducing the cable size.

You mentioned the tuning stability was "the same as with a PLS." Well, if the result is the same but the installation is longer and more complex, I still struggle to see the real advantage. As for energy consumption, whether it's a PLS or a PianoGuard, it's minimal in both cases - so that doesn't really make a difference.

Regarding the app and remote monitoring: since it relies on the client's Wi-Fi, I wonder how well it holds up over time - power cuts, router upgrades, password changes, and so on. It's true that we'd find it genuinely useful to have an alert or a simple log showing when the system was unplugged or when water was added. I've heard even Dampp-Chaser themselves are exploring something along those lines.

Opinions around this seem quite divided, with strong beliefs on both sides. But regardless of the method or the brand, the goal remains the same: greater tuning stability and a stable average humidity inside the piano. On that point, I'm quite firm in my understanding of what actually works.

I just heard about this system last week, it looks like a really nice system and I'm especially happy that PLS has some competition- it can only be healthy for the industry.

A 15% humidity range (45-60%) seems like quite a lot to me. Does anyone know what testing has occurred to arrive at these numbers? Additionally, is there a two-tank system for larger pianos like PLS has, or at least an efficient way to distribute the humidity evenly over large soundboards?

Imo, 15% is not a lot and if it's between 45–60% I don't think you need any apparatus at all.
