My brother in law is a farmer so I have heard a great deal about this issue with John Deere. I have never heard from my brother in law or any of his farmer friends that John Deere deliberately messed with the software to interfere with tractor performance. Not only would that be illegal - but the long term repercussions of of such an action would be catastrophic for the company. Farmers have VERY long memories.
What is true is that Deere (like many car makers before them) created proprietary software that made it impossible for anyone but an "authorized" shop from repairing their tractors. As a group farmers tend to be very handy and are accustomed to repairing their own equipment - at least the mechanical issues. Computer issues are another story.
So what has happened here is very muich like the right-to-repair laws in regard to cars. The computer codes, and specialized tools and parts can no longer be reserved only for John Deere dealers.

I recall seeing this issue discussed on public television (Nova I think...but it might have been some other thing). This equipment costs as much as a house or more and the farmers claim that JD was messing with the software through the "cloud" to make the units stop running (often at the most inopportune time), and then they would have to wait till an "authorized" service person could come to "repair" it (owners were literally locked out). Of course it was expensive to have this done (naturally). All the time the crops were waiting...
They were lamenting the days when they could fix anything that broke or went wrong themselves and get back to work.
I think Audi and other car makers have resorted to some of the same tactics...corporate greed...

More important than that; will they allow you to buy a new hood ornament?

The winds of change are ever blowing. I think this good for us all. Steinway may have hitched their service model to a train running out of steam. Who knows.

I'm not sure how this will come through, but imagine you can find the story if you look for it.
It's relevant for some in this profession.
