Interesting question. Maybe this has happened to others: I recently rebuilt a model D,
and used the string height and hammer center height numbers to calculate bore, boring the
hammers to follow the string plane. Nothing changed during the rebuild with regard to
string height and the action was not modified. When installing the action, the rest
cushions had to be cut down in order for the bass hammers to clear the stretcher.
Did Steinway shorten the hammer bore just to get the action into the piano? Perhaps, since
the piano now regulates properly and was troublesome before. My understanding is that they
intend the blow to happen when the shanks are parallel to the strings, not to overcenter, which
was probably the case before.
I'll have to check the stretcher height next time I see the piano.
