Specialized equipment for CAUT and shop work?

    Greetings.

I wonder if any of you at colleges and universities have any specialized equipment that you find especially useful, such as tilters, certain power tools, and so on.  I'm trying to think of things that would be good to have here that are bigger than your typical hand tools.

    Thanks!

    Hi Zeno;

I have a band saw, bench grinder/buffer, drill press, belt/disc bench sander (Grizzly brand) and access to even bigger stuffs at the Lied Center shop for the rare needs, but nice to have; like table saws, venting area if painting or staining something, even a lathe, but I've never needed it.

    Paul,
I have a very small 1 1/2" bgsc lathe made by Cowells of Norwich that I use from time to tine shortening wrest pins and cleaning screw heads &c. I didn't get it for those purposes, but I find multi uses for it in action repair work. Not exactly a 'must have' more a 'nice to have' bit of kit.  Michael (UK)

I also have a device for creating a jet of super-hot steam. It is a 'mister cappuccino' 'Ariete' Wonderful for removing damper felts, key felts, hammer rest felts &c. Only takes about 1/4 pint of water and has a push-button on top to release the steam through its swivel pipe.  Michael (UK)

If only I had space, I would have a band saw and drill press at a minimum, preferably a table saw as well. I do have a tilt dollie - a definite must, as caster stems get bent, and I use it to install pairs of dollies on uprights that need to be more mobile (in classrooms). I would also have a bench sander: disc and 1" belt with tables that can be adjusted to angles. The belt can also be used for sharpening as in the Surgi-Sharp kit.

Smaller things like electric drill, Dremel kit of some sort, a decent "electric screwdriver" (Milwaukee M12 with adjustable clutch is my hands down favorite for shop work), Metro Vac n Blo and the like go without saying. Some kind of a bench with vises - wood and metal. Various clamps, including wood screw and bar or pipe as well as C and spring of various sizes. That's what occurs to me at the moment.

Oh Yes!  The Sergi-Sharp. I have that as well.  Has paid for itself ten-fold!

This is great, let's keep it coming!  I have some stuff (bench, vises, upright tilter, sander) and access to other stuff (drill press, table and band saws...)  I ask because we'll be moving into a new building in the next year or so and I want to come up with a good list of needs while they're thinking of furnishings.

How about something to safely lift the plates for belly work?  We've got a come-a-long bolted to a concrete building support beam, but I'm sure there are some cool rig you might want like an engine hoist or something.

    Zeno,

Be sure to build in good ventilation into your shop.

If you are doing much action analysis, I would suggest buying the Fandrich-Rhodes Weightbench software.

    A router is handy.

Fred, let me put in a plug for ShopSmith. I've used mine since 1990. My add-ons are a bandsaw, jointer and thickness planer. An oscillating spindle sander is a must have, my Rigid comes with an oscillating belt sander feature. other handy tools are a reciprocal saw,
belt sanders, Dremel Tool, vented buffing station, dust collector, multi-tool, die grinder.

Actually, a router table is very handy to have. I really like having a jointer/planer in my home shop. Not that necessary, but there are plenty of times when it makes life a lot easier.
