I noticed something interesting about an Everett upright piano this afternoon. Just above the bass section, C3 and C#3 were strung on a row containing three tuning pins, yet they were strung with just two wound strings.

I haven't seen that before.  Pictures attached.

Could it it be they are leaving an option to install a three string arrangement for those notes?

The bi chord strings contain an extra (3rd) tuning pin. Possibly to string with plain strings and convert to tri-chord unisons??!

I'd be interested to learn more about this situation. I've never seen it or heard of it before. thanks!

Hi Sean. Looks like piano was restrung, poorly. I'm pretty sure earlier Everett consoles and spinets had three string unisons just above the break. Maybe they were trying to duplicate the later scale of Everett  consoles which had two aluminum bivords above the break ...?. Who knows.  If you look at the bridge you'll probably find evidence of a middle string having been there.   Wow I finally got to respond! Thanks Anthony

When restringing pianos with foreshortened low tenor scales (hockey stick bridge scales) it is often a good practice to replace lowest plainwire strings with wrapped strings. Someone may have restrung this piano, or it may be from a time when Everett was transitioning to wrapped bichords in the low tenor (the ones I've seen have aluminum wrap and just two holes in the plate web).
If you are restringing a small piano, a good bass string designer (Arledge is one) can advise you about converting low tenor to bichords, and you will be happy with the result.
