I installed a set of new hammers on a Samick grand.  The piano has wippen assist springs.  When the hammers return from hitting the strings the tail of the hammer hits the assist spring making an audible click.

Attached is a picture of the original hammers and the new hammers.  The new hammers have the dark molding.  You can see the slight difference in the shape of the hammer tail.

The only solution I can think of is to shave off some wood from the end of the hammer tail until they no longer touch.  I realize it will drop the hammer weight slightly but it will be insignificant.

I am wondering is there is a different solution and would appreciate suggestions.  Decreasing hammer blow distance or increasing the thickness of the hammer rest felt is not possible.

    Thanks,

    David Weiss

remove the bloody whippen assist springs. To do this, correct the leverage at the capstan, & reduce hammer weight

    David,

The hammer rest rail cannot be raised? How much space is there between the shank and the rest cushion?

If those hammers are the same number, the new ones are much bigger! That sets your hammer shank too low with correct blow didtance.

    Thanks for replies.

Larry, those two hammers are not the same number.  The new hammers are the same size as the old ones.

Alan.  I tried raising the hammer rest rail, but even with the minimum hammer blow distance the shanks will be resting on the rail if I raise it enough to eliminate the click.

Chris.  Very likely that is what I will have to do.

Jim.  I have considered that.  However I think it would be simpler to remove some material from the end of the hammer.  What I may do is remove the wippen assist spring from one or two notes and check touchweight to see how much difference they are making. If the assistance the assist springs give is negligible, I many end up removing them rather than messing the hammer tails.

    Additional input is welcome.

Start over and copy the original shape that worked.

Why is increasing the thickness of the hammer rest felt not possible and how much space is there between the shank and the rest felt?

I think Samick relied on the springs instead of leads to balance the action. I would trim a little off the inside of the tail to clear the spring. What is the length of the tail? I would also reduce spring tension and install leads after reducing and graduating the Strike Weight.  The springs should just support the weight of the wippen and not aid in lifting the hammer.
