I'm currently taking microscopic pictures of spruce through various steps up to carbonization. Prior to torrefaction this picture was taken. Looked cool.

Can't fool me. I know that is a NASA picture of the sun. The solar flares give it away......

I remember a knabe square that came in my shop a couple of years ago. The spruce had an amazing quality to it. Unlike spruce in most pianos, this spruce, a person could only barely touch, and immediately you could tell the very very quick response it had. I was impressed with the sensitivity. As a result, to this day it is one of the nicest sounding Squares i ever came across. From that day on i knew that spruce can be altered and enhanced.  I recently found a document from a veteran pianomaker who lived to be 73 years old. He's been long forgotten. He spent his entire life building pianos. 2 years before he died he wrote out his entire process. It is amazing the knowledge they had about such things in the mid 1800's. Tooling up for the new process, i'll have the results next year.
