To all of those interested in such things, at 8:00 PM tonight (Monday, November 12), there will be a concert featuring Der Bauch, a Mexican improvisation ensemble that has ventured deep into the world of extended techniques on piano. In working with them, I have heard several sounds that I've never before heard coming out of a piano (and I've heard a pretty wide range of piano-based sonic discoveries). They did two nights at REDCAT, CalArts' downtown venue over the weekend, featuring all of the techniques and musicality that will be ours to enjoy tonight, plus they had the piano "suspendido", hanging, suspended by just a few strands of large-core piano wire. (Sorry, but we won't be featuring that particular element tonight.)
