    Clear DayList,
Many of you have requested instructions for applying our mortise inserts in naturals and sharps. I had a slideshow added to my website showing how relatively easy it is. Go to www.pianoandorgankeys.com then choose the slideshows page, and then select mortise replacement. An easy and accurate fix for a huge problem.

    Avery,
Click on the slideshow drop box and select "Mortise Replacement". Then the first picture of 17 pictures shows up, click on the arrow facing right (>) to use the automatic picture advancer or manually browse clicking on the + or - signs. The instructions are right above the pictures, the >, +, - symbols are right below the pictures. enjoy, Mike

Au contraire, mon frere. There is a slide show queued up at the bottom (big photo). To the right of that is a drop-down box with a down arrow, click, scroll, click and, to quote the Great One (Jackie Gleason) "And awaaaaayyyy we go!"

    Clear DayList,
I am personally using Internet Explorer, when I had the website made, I asked that it be universal or accommodating to other web browsers, whether it is, I don't know. I will ask my webmaster tomorrow whether I can do something to make it more user friendly. The instructions above the slideshows work well in IE, if they don't in other browsers, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for looking Mike

    Clear DayMike,
I figured out the slide show, I didn't scroll down far enough on the page. I'll be ordering soon off your site. Great photos, thanks for your time in this. Question: I know I could use a router instead of a dado blade for stock removal, but I just can't help but think of nasty tearout in that key with the dado set up. I assume you don't have that problem, do you use it simply for fast removal reasons?

    Clear DayFenton,

If you look in the slideshow, the slide that shows removing the worn material from a natural clears that up. They've clamped a small sacrificial scrap of wood on the trailing edge of the key to prevent tear-out.

    Clear DayFenton,
I have a sacrificial piece of wood clamped behind the area to be mortised (that picture is actually the key after being cut), this will eliminate a blow-out. I have used routers to do the same thing, but it can tend to burn the wood if the bit is not razor sharp, router is actually quicker for a few mortise replacements but for many, the dado is the way to go. There are many ways to do this, I suggest people do what works for them, what is within their capacity, skill wise or equipment wise. Mike

    Hi Fenton,

I just recently tried out the dado for a set of balance hole inserts and found there was way less tear-out than with a router. I was very pleased; didn't even have to back the work up. You also have more options for the width by adding or subtracting dado shims.

    Nice work, Mike!

Clear DayAny particular brand/type of dado you'd recommend. My early experience with wobblers turned me off to them and I've never used them since.
I assume you end up with a flat, machined, glue joint ready surface left behind by the dado. If that's the case I can see a future for them with me.
    Thanks,
    Fenton

    Clear DayFenton,
I wouldn't get a wobbler, my father-in-law had one and it cut unpredictably, I have a nice stackable set, it cuts clean and straight, if you use the table saw make sure your crosslide/t-square is exactly 90 degrees to the saw blade and that the saw blade is 90 degrees to the table, your only as accurate as your setup. Good luck, Mike

Doesn't work with Firefox for me either, and IE is denied
    internet access on my machine.

Before I start getting instructions on how to fix that, denial
of internet access to IE is premeditated and entirely intentional.
