    Hi guys and gals -

I am having difficulty replacing a whippen spring, namely getting the cord through the hole in the rep lever.  Any bright ideas?

I have trimmed the end of the cord, and put a few drops of glue on it.  I can get it through the hole to start, but when I pull it through, the outer sheath pulls back and exposes only the innards.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Scott

Yes, Scott, there is a method of madness in doing this procedure.

Trimming the cord only as you have described doesn't work. You have to pull back the outer covering to expose the inner cord. Maybe an inches worth, then trim the inner part only, then pull the outer skin back and do the glue trick you mention, but only on the outer skin.

This will allow you to insert the glued outer skin part through the flange holes far enough whereby you can grab it and pull the rest of the material through that is needed to do the repair.

That is what I do for a cord used for holding a  damper spring.

Thanks, guys.  I got it to work, finally.  I had to pull back the outer sheath, glue it, and then trim away most of the glued area with an exacto to get it through.  I appreciate your help.

For future reference, cut a section and pull the core strands out a few inches to staggered lenghts, a few at a time. This will cause the opposite end to taper. Treat the 'thin' end with glue and place in a vise or similar and clamp a weight on the other end to allow the taper to dry. Then, to size the cord to the hole, pull out the already partially pulled out core strands one or two at a time until the correct diameter is achieved.

Use a piece of dental floss, thread the doubled end through, then place the cord in the loop, and pull the doubled end through. From the opposite side of course.
Then drill out the hole and using a rounded tooth glued in to secure it.
    Read second first.
