I recently got a text from a client about the Piano Technician Academy.  I have never heard of it before.  The client wanted to know if it is reputable and if it is worth the $1300.00 tuition.  Has anyone gone through this course, and if so, how well does it work?  Thanks

Actually, it works very well. Piano Technicians Academy has been around for a number of years now and have established a history.  They are all members (one an RPT) of the PTG and are very supportive of the PTG in their encouragement of joining the PTG, pursuing RPT and having a booth at our conventions. Their course was built from scratch as an online school with high quality video/audio sessions broken up into 'bite sized' sections. With my interest in international relations, I have been paying attention to their global outreach which extends to over 50 countries.  The PTA allowed me full access to the course of which I went through and passed as a Certified Piano Technician.

The course is intended for someone who starts with absolutely no knowledge of piano work and leaves them with a basic understanding of both tuning and repair.  Like all online and correspondence courses, self-study can only achieve so much and prepares the student for in-person classes such as the Grand Action Regulation at the home office, intermediate and advanced classes at the convention such as aural tuning or touch weight.

If someone wanted to learn from home, this course would answer that and, if faithfully apply themselves, would have an understanding of what is involved being a piano technician. Think of it as a springboard to kick off a new career.  It is not a be-all, end-all course, but it will get you started.
