Is there anyone out there still using Naptha & Mineral oil, or is it outdated?  Are the results satisfactory?   What ratio is best?

Roger, I've used a mixture of naptha and silicone for years with good success.  The recipe is from a Baldwin manual years ago and is 1 part silicone to 7 parts naptha.  The theory is that the naptha shrinks the bushing freeing it up, and the silicone is left as a lubricant.  Do your shank burning BEFORE applying the solution.  I find this mixture is equal to Protek and GooseJoice and much cheaper.

Where are you getting your pure Silicone?  I used to have some of that old Wurlitzer pin driving fluid, but used it up a long time ago.

Unless you want to buy a gallon of silicone, here's how to get it:  Buy a can of silicone spray (any brand will do).  With a sharp awl, poke a tiny hole in the top of the can to let the propellant escape.  When the gas is gone, make the hole larger and make a second one on the opposite side of the top and pour the liquid contents into a measured container.  Voila! You now have liquid silicone.
As an aside, when we visited Brazil a few years ago, silicone is sold in every grocery store as a water repellent for leather gloves, outerwear and shoes.  Guess you'll have to go to S. America to get it.  If you want a gallon, www.clearcoproducts.com in PA has it.

Thanks Mike.  I like your Plan For The Can.  South America is out this year.

A quick google search ("silicone oil") finds 100% silicone oil, 2oz, $2, and up. That's the stuff used in shock absorbers. I don't know if there are different formulations/chemical makeups.
