I've done my share of expanding action bracket (EAB) replacements on Young Chang grands. But tonight I received a call from another technician asking me to service a Kohler & Campbell grand with "blocking hammers". This sounds like EAB but I haven't heard of this affecting K&C grands which are (currently) a Samick product. (I believe - I can't keep track sometimes) In any event, I'm curious as to whether or not K&C was/is affected by EAB and are/were they ever made by Young Chang (which would answer my question without my having to go see the piano first).

    Does anybody know ???

I'm not sure about the K & C but I'll add this as anecdotal.

I just serviced a Young & Chang with blocking hammers.  I was expecting the EAB's. In reality, I found a Y&C that had recently been moved with an aftermarket PianoDisc player in it .  The action had shifted to the back, and the rear of the keyframe was riding up on something in the back action elevating the rear of the keyframe about 5mm. That's all it took to have blocking hammers. After pulling the action and reinstalling it correctly, the blocking hammers went away.

Hopefully, it's something that simple...  :-)

    Rob (and all),

Interesting anecdote as it I'm told that this piano DOES have a PianoDisc installed. So perhaps this will be the solution. Thanks !!!!!!

"recently been moved" being the operative here.

The piano is on it's side during a move and the action has a chance to get on top of the una corda lever.  Reaching under the piano (while on it's legs) and pulling down on the lever where it touches the pedal push rod usually produces the tell tale thump of the action dropping back down against the keybed.

I can usually fix these over the phone but then there's those that are so anxious to place blame and $$$ue the daylight$ out of the mover$ thinking their beloved piano ha$ been ruined  .........  ah yes, another rant, another day.

I think I just ruined some free halibut  ........  leaving it in the oven a minute or so too long.

    Larry and Donn,

Since this was my first experience with a Y&C piano with blocking hammers, I wasn't aware of the una corda pedal being the probable problem area.  But seeing as the una corda pedal wasn't working when I got there but it was working when I left, that is obviously the most likely culprit!

Thanks for clarifying what I saw and did.  It all makes sense now. Today is a good day... I learned something... again...  :-)

As it was, I had to pull the action anyway to repin about 9 hammer flanges for hammers that were stuck in the horizontal position, so it wasn't a total wasted effort.

    Regards,
