Hi, all.  I have a customer that asked me what my opinion is about the brand "Marshall and Wendell" pianos.  Having never seen one, I thought maybe someone out there would comment on the quality of this brand .  You may email me privately if you wish, or post it here.  Thanks in advance for any input on this brand.

Hi Clark.  My Mom bought a M&W player upright at about 1954 or so for $100.  She made ten dollar payments to the dealer until it was paid off.  As kids we all learned how to play piano on it.  It had a large full tone up until the day I sold it .... maybe 5 years ago.  It withstood the pounding I gave it and my brother learned "Rhapsody in Blue" on it.  It was always my opinion that it was a very well made piano.  BTW, the player part stopped working about the time I was old enough to reach the pedals.

I concur with the Head Hosehead. In my own limited experience, these seem to be well-made pianos. However, I was compelled to make and old M & W grand play well enough for a house concert last month. The biggest challenge was working around a case of action bracket-itis. Yes, the dreaded expanding action brackets.

Unrelated to the quality of manufacture, a new assistant was startled when a critter flew out of one of the back check felts. (Hadn't seen that one before.) Or was it from the action cloth in the knuckle core? (Could have been!) Yoikes!!!

These were middle of the road pianos, but good for home use... of course depending on where it has been (conditio0n). It also may have been a player piano at one time. Be sure to check that, or you can teach the customer how to check that here:
