After a long struggle with replacing a set of hammers, shanks, and butts in an old upright with a brass rail, I am looking for a better way. The Spurlock Vertical Hammer Pre-Hanging Jig looks promising, but it doesn't seem to be manufactured anymore, either by Spurlock or by Pianotek. Has anyone tried using the Spurlock Grand Hammer Hanging Jig for this? It seems like I could support the hammer shanks on a board with slots for the hammer shanks and then use the hammer shank clamp for the final trimming. Is this basically how the pre-hanging jig worked? Or is there a better way to do this job?

The grand hammer jig is different from the upright jig. The upright jig has a broad 85 mm shelf to support the shanks. Look for someone selling one and keep searching ebay for it.

You can make a lot of jigs yourself with basic shop machines - table saw and drill press.
 Ted Sambell made tons of jigs including the ones used for upright hammer hanging. Some were the subject of Journal articles in the past, and he used many in his convention seminars over the years,
I would check the back issues of the Journal and contact Ted.
