My guess is those holes were for plungers of a player system. Whether one was ever installed is a question. Take a flashlight and look into the holes when the action is in place. Likely you'll see the bottom of the keysticks. Action out, you'll see the damper levers.

I came across this piano the other day which has a straight line of holes drilled through the keybed. Any idea what these holes are for? The piano doesn't look like it was ever a player piano in any other regard, but maybe I'm wrong.
