    Hello all,

I have a client who had something work its way inside their Yamaha AvantGrand N2 hybrid piano / keyboard. They called me to fix some clicking keys. Upon inspection, there's definitely something struck where the hammers would be in a normal grand. Here these are metallic canisters.

I went in thinking it would be easy to pull the action. However, the key rail and action brackets are screwed into the base of the instrument, which doesn't appear to slide out like a regular grand key frame. I can't access the screws because of the odd angle. It looks like there might be a way to take apart the top and access the action though there, but I can't find any screws that are accessible from the outside. (Yeah, real smart idea to screw everything together from the inside.)

Does anyone know how to open one of these? I'd even settle for disassembling the action if that's an option. Thanks!

Thanks Martin, we found this yesterday. Unfortunately it doesn’t have anything on how to access the action, unless we both (my client and I) missed the obvious.

Benjamin, call the Yamaha service department, and they'll talk you through it/point you to downloadable resources. I do recall technicians talking about it taking nearly an hour to get to the action, at least on their first go-round. Apparently it gets easier if you take them apart with some regularity.

I've had the misfortune to open a couple of these things. Thankfully, with the good help from Yamaha Tech Support. Had to replace a broken hammer shank. Contact them before you guess your way into it. They have specific instructions on how to open it up correctly. There is a precise order, and method to opening it up to access the action, and if you do it incorrectly... well... that's when you will see the small warning labels that say do no remove this screw because you will not be able to get it back in. And yeah. It will easily take you an hour to open it up and another hour to close it again. Seriously. Contact Yamaha before you dive in to this one. They will provide you with the absolutely necessary step-by-step instructions.

A big thank you to everyone who called / emailed / posted here in response to my question! I really appreciate it.

Here's the other cross-posted thread. In it Mariana Quinn shared a Yamaha PDF on maintenance that would be helpful for anyone else who needs to open an AvantGrand:
