Hey guys, sorry if this is off topic.

I was gluing in a rubber bumper on a grand lid and the CA glue splashed out of the hole.

This caused a splash mark on the finish that needs repair.

It is a black satin lacquer  finish.

Any help or comments would be great!

Hi Joseph:
If it was a polyester finish, you'd be able to use acetone, but obviously this won't work with lacquer.  You will have to sand it off and re-satinize the surface to match the sheen.  I would put clear tape around the area and use maybe 600 wet/dry paper to level the surface.  If the glue is very thin, you won't need the tape.  Use a hard, flat block to sand.  Sand it very carefully, lest you go through the finish.  Then go to 1200 or even finer.  Alternatively, you could use a razor blade to scrape the surface to remove the glue, then sand.  You can use very fine pumice powder on a damp sponge to bring back the satin to match the original finish.  However, if you have a matte finish, nothing will match by rubbing it out, you'd have to spray with matte lacquer, and it probably won't blend, so refinishing in that case might be necessary.  Or at least a coat of clear satin (matte) topcoat. 
Anyway, that's what I would do.  Good luck.

find someone in your ptg chapter that is experienced with finish repair or you will rue the day.. i use something other than ca glue to do this type of gluing/repair but most of the time the buttons are a very snug fit. a good place to find various glues that work well on pianos is the glue section in a Michaels or Hobby Lobby store. you will find glues that work well with plastics, cork,felt, cloth, leather, wood . for future reference it would be better to coat the button with the glue and not push the button into a glue filled hole.

Break off a few inches of a mill file. Ease the sharp edges. Carefully file off the glue.  Do you have debonder?

I had a pointed awl fall on a lid, black hand-rubbed, and filled the chip with Black GluBoost, spraying accelerator before and after application.
Once cured, I filed the glue with the file end. It did not scratch the surrounding area. I do have to use some black acrylic to fill the margins.
I'll file that and blend the area with 600 wet and gray ScotchBrite. I'll remove the long hinge and rub-out the whole lid.

I hate it when that happens.

I have learned that different debonders have different chemical makeups and therefore different strengths. For instance the BSI debonder is quite aggressive and will probably attack the finish as well as the glue. The debonder from Satellite City is far less aggressive, and takes longer to work, and therefore is less likely to damage most finishes. Still, one must be careful with this stuff. 

Joe, I would like to know what the end result is in your case. Please publish.

Ah, interesting. I had assumed they were all more or less the same. The stuff I've had trouble with on lacquer is labeled "Golden West Super Solvent". I'll have to try out some others, because it would be nice to have in the bag of tricks...

Sorry this happened. I'm sure you know "now" that CA isn't the right glue for this. I use the craft glue from Walmart, which is PVC-E.

If you're lucky, there might have been enough wax/oil/crud/whatever on the finish to prevent the glue from bonding well properly.  You might be able to carefully pop it off with your fingernail or a soft plastic "spudger" tool.

More than likely it really is stuck, as CA glue seems to bond pretty well to lacquer.  Follow the steps Paul outlined.  High quality 0000 steel wool (ex. the stuff from Liberon -- it's a lot finer and more consistent than the stuff you can get at the home centers) is also good for final rubout. 

DO NOT TRY TO USE CA DEBONDER -- it'll eat the lacquer just as well as the CA glue.  Don't ask me how I know...

The basic approach is to put two pieces of tape on either side of the splash and scrape it down to as close to level as the thickness of the tape allows. Then remove the tape and sand it flush with a block and use 400 then 800 paper. Sand in the direction of the satin grain.  Then using 0000 steel wool and a lubricant (water will do) blend the satin sheen.
