A long time ago I was working on our family Steinway A for my sister, and Bob and Marcia Davis in Stockton were helping. Marcia refinished the soundboard, and Bob gilded the plate. I complained that the regilded plates I saw were all too pale and not a deep buttery enough gold. He did some experimenting. He had some bronzing powder which was gold with some red in it, and some other powder which was gold with some green in it. He found that when he put them together, he got the exact shade that the plate had been originally.
