Here's what I ended up doing...actually I flexed and went with an Iphone, instead of the mini Ipad, but the same set up works with a mini Ipad camera mount I have as well. Took a cheap camera type mount, made a brass nipple with 3/8 x 30 male threads, 1/4 x 20 female threads, turned in a 1/4 bolt and bent it to a nice angle. The 3/8 x 30 threads screw into a watanabe tip, Works nicely. It is quite steady, and allows me to touch the screen without flexing the thing or tipping it over.

I use basically the same concept as both Scotts do, with the exception that mine is not magnetic or snap on. The iPad is held in place by a leather sleeve around the outer edges. Less than $15 from Amazon if I remember correctly.

Scott beat me to it. I use something similar: a case by Speck.
Works well everywhere.

Here's the setup I use. Just a tablet case that I place at various places on the plate.
