Does anyone know the exact description of the current Steinway flange screw?  Is it a blunt end machine screw?  Pan screw?

What with tradition being a  guiding light of Steinway's public face, I think we can honor their tradition of changing the flange screws whenever new "efficiencies" are discovered.

Domes, round-head, and flat-heads (both anodized and plain), cheek block screws  and others mark  the meandering stroll among various threaded fasteners from 1900 to the present. A journey that  leaves  tradition somewhat dog-eared and peened  after being hammered to fit the successive management decisions that waft through the parts department.

      Oh, you mean right now??
    Don't know. Sorry.

Dealing with a Model B in which I wish the rebuilder had used flat top screws rather than the original dome top screws. Now with thicker flanges they are dragging on the bottom of the pinblock...argh!

Peter:  That is exactly the issue on this one; the dome shaped screws have clearance problems under the stretcher.  The flat screws will give adequate clearance.  A "set" can be purchased from Steinway, btw, for $120.

As the thread is self-tapping, the head style is pan and the thread is sheet metal (not wood),
and the ends are unpointed, my interpretation is:

pointless (pun intended) pan head self-tapping sheet metal screws.

my two cents (sharp or flat?)

I've replaced overturning screws on S&S with #10 pan head sheet metal screws. Self tapping may chew up the threading too much on subsequent re-installs.

I seem to recall that there was a period when the "pan head" screws were in fact the recommended fastener...that is till they found something they could charge 10 times the price for. (Oh my...my cynical self is showing...uh oh).  Then again I could be wrong on that.
