I first tried lanolin, which we had around the house, when I tried the side-voicing pliers I acquired. It's great for getting the needles in, but even better for allowing the needles to come out. Sticking needles can be an issue in side-voicing, especially since it can stress the center pins if undue effort is required to remove them.
So I'd say if you have hard, dense felt and the needles don't come out easily, try dipping the needles in lanolin. Disclosure: I never use those side-voicing pliers.

Nose oil works really well, (for me), for lubricating voicing needles when they become "dry" and they stop penetrating the felt easily. Most noticeable when needling slowly. Not so evident when just pounding the needles into the felt.

I believe I was reading in Pianos Inside Out (Igrec) to use Lanolin Oil to lubricate voicing needles. A few questions:
Who here lubricates voicing needles? Who doesn't? Why or why not?
If you do, what do you use and how do you apply it? Is it lanolin oil? Where would I obtain it?
