    Dear Colleagues,

I am trying to determine the age of a Baldwin grand that I service.  The serial # on the plate is 88956 which according to The piano atlas
Would mean it was manufactured in 1940.  There is also a serial #(I think) on the action frame 29173 which would mean the piano was manufactured in 1917.  I have not encountered a Baldwin with cast iron action rails and flange screws that are machine screws instead of wood screws.  Any information you might be able to share would be appreciated.  A few pictures are attached.  Thanks.

    All the best,
    Steve

A couple questions,  What are the dimensions?  At what note is the bass/tenor break?

You have properly interpreted the numbers, the action number is the case number which is found on most parts.  You should also find the SN on the belly rail when viewed from under the piano.

Thanks Bill.  I wasn't sure because there is also a 4 digit manufacturing # on the key frame and keystop rail 5667.

What model letter can you find? It should be on the belly rail with the SN viewed from under the piano - high treble area.

I will see the piano later this week and et you know what I find.  Why is there a 4 digit manufacturing # as well as a 5 digit # on the action?  Did these Baldwin's typically have cast iron action rails?

    Walter,

The break is at E2/F2.  I didn't measure the piano, but I think it is about 6 feet long.  There is no letter on the plate like L or F which would tell me the size.

If the bass treble break is at E2 (only 20 bass notes), I have a hunch it is a Baldwin Model E - 5'8", as the bass stringing of only 20 notes is distinctive.  If so, it is probably not 1940, as the Model E was phased out by the Model R before that.

Thanks Walter.  Did the model E have cast iron action rails?

Stephen, I have attached a couple of Model E photos for comparison.  It is a 5'8 instrument.

    Bill, thanks for the correction,

Walter, the E continued as the W for a time, it could be 1940.

Interesting about the E and the W. I just checked on a piano I always thought was an E and lo and behold, it's a W. Check out the belly rail photo.

Walter, Bill and Zeno - Thanks for your help in  identifying the Baldwin grand.  I went back to the piano today.
I believe it is a Baldwin C made in 1917.  The letter C is on the plate and the # on the belly rail is the same 5 digit number that is stamped on the action.  I am not sure why a different # was on the plate, but I suspect it was put there by a rebuilder.  I am attaching a few photos.

    All the best,
    Steve

C is the scale designation. Most C scales I have encountered have had a K in front of the serial number. So I assume they were sold as a model K, although technicians around here commonly call them a C.

The model L had SC cast into the plate in the same location. It had an L above the serial number on the plate, and was sold as an L.

Took another look at the piano I posted a picture of the other day. The inkstamp on the belly rail said W but the letters SE are vast in the plate down by the tail.

Makes sense. I recently rebuilt an E scale which had an H before the serial number.  So a model H?  I believe the model M was an SA scale.  They seem to have added an S when they changed to a new scale in a similar size piano.

No S, E,W or SE found anywhere on this piano only the letter C cast in the plate.

Those who attended my class on Baldwin in Tucson received a digital image of  a Baldwin Service Manual which includes a comprehensive summary chart of scales and models with the corresponding string schedules.   I can send that chart privately to those who email me.  It is very informative.

Roy, as for your E/H, the two models or styles built with the E scale  were E and H, representing different cabinet styles.
